What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a performance based word-of-mouth marketing strategy.

Simply put, you reap rewards when your efforts result in a sale.

It’s not like working as a cashier, where you’d be paid the same wage regardless of how much customers spend in the store.

Instead, you earn a commission.

Kinda like a car salesman or an Avon lady.

The best part? You do everything online and never need to come into contact with other humans. Hooray.

Advantages of Affiliate Marketing

Before we dive into the details, let’s look at why affiliate marketing is a great option compared to other online business models.

Low Startup Costs

Unlike selling your own products, you don’t need to invest in inventory or manufacturing.

You can start with minimal upfront costs.

Blogging, my chosen affiliate marketing method of choice, costs less than $3 per month if you host with Bluehost.

The brilliant thing about blogging is that you aren’t limited to one monetisation method.

Affiliate marketing is only one of many ways to make money as a blogger.

    No Customer Service

As an affiliate marketer, you don’t need to deal with customers.

Customer service, returns, and refunds aren’t your concern.

If an unhappy customer complains or returns an item, it’s simply not your problem.

You focus solely on marketing and promotion.

    It’s your only job.

    Flexibility

You can work from anywhere and set your own hours.

I don’t know about you speaking for myself, nothing beats working at my own pace in my own space!

    Diverse Income Streams

You can promote multiple products from different companies, diversifying your income streams and reducing risk.

    Passive Income Potential

Once you’ve set up your content and links, you can earn money passively.

Your blog post or video can continue generating sales long after it’s published.

    Be your own boss

You’ll have nobody to answer to but yourself.

No set working conditions, hours or any other arbitrary conditions that don’t sit well with you.

    You make the rules.

    Step 1: Choose Your Niche

Choosing the right niche is crucial.

And in case you were wondering, it’s pronounced neesh and not nitch.

    There is no T!

A niche is a specific topic or segment of the market that you want to target.

Think of it as picking a field to play in.

Popular affiliate marketing niches include, but aren’t limited to:

    • Personal brands
    • Home decor
    • Travel
    • Beauty
    • Health & fitness
    • Parenting
    • Tech
    • Business

Some niches are more profitable than others due to high price points and/or commission rates.

However, I’d advise anyone pursuing this path not to pick a topic based on income potential alone.

Sure, tech affiliates do well, but are you actually a tech nerd?

Beauty affiliates do brilliantly, but are you even a makeup fanatic?

My answer to both is no!

I haven’t worn makeup in almost a decade but that didn’t stop me attempting to earn through makeup affiliate programs.

I published less than 10 beauty posts before I burned out.

Now that I focus on cruising, I post daily articles.

Sometimes, I publish twice a day because I can’t get enough of cruise ships!

To be clear, I’m an armchair cruiser.

No different to a travel agent who hasn’t been to every place they help their clients book.

I take my job seriously and extensively research each cruise line, ship, destination and shore excursion I recommend.

I’m obsessed and my obsession is the main reason I’m able to hyper focus on the topic.

If you also have a hyper fixation, I highly recommend researching affiliate programs on your favourite topic and stick with it if you find any.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a special interest. You can also consider your area of expertise, personal life experience and topics you’d like to or are willing to explore.

    How to Choose a Niche

    1. Passion and Knowledge: Pick something you are passionate about and know well. This makes it easier to create content and stay motivated.
    2. Market Demand: Ensure there is demand for the products in your niche. Use tools like Google Trends or Keyword Planner to check the popularity of your niche.
    3. Competition: A little competition is good—it shows there’s a market. But too much can make it hard to stand out. Find a balance.

Step 2: Find Affiliate Programs in Your Niche

Once you’ve chosen your niche, it’s time to find affiliate programs that offer products or services in that area.

    Types of Affiliate Programs

    1. Individual Merchant Programs: Many companies run their own affiliate programs. Examples include Amazon Associates and Shopify.
    2. Affiliate Networks: These are platforms that host multiple affiliate programs. Popular ones include ShareASale, CJ Affiliate, and Rakuten.

    How to Find Affiliate Programs

    • Google Search: A simple search like “Your Niche + Affiliate Program” can yield plenty of results.
    • Affiliate Networks: Browse through networks like ShareASale and CJ Affiliate to find programs in your niche.
    • Competitor Research: Look at what programs other affiliates in your niche are promoting.

    Step 3: Choose Your Platform

Now that you’ve chosen your niche and found some affiliate programs, it’s time to pick a platform to promote your links.

    Popular Platforms for Affiliate Marketing

    Blogging

When it comes to picking a platform, nothing beats blogging.

For one, you’ll actually own your blog if you set it up the right way.

Don’t get me wrong, utilising social media and platforms such as Pinterest can work wonders but they’re ticking time bombs.

Policies change, algorithms update and there’s simply no security.

The only way you’ll have a stable and secure affiliate marketing method is if you actually own your assets.

    Don’t worry, running a blog doesn’t cost a bomb.

Step 5: Drive Traffic to Your Content

Creating content is just the beginning. You need to get people to see it.

      Ways to Drive Traffic

      1. SEO: Optimize your content to rank on search engines. This includes keyword research, on-page optimization, and backlinking.
      2. Social Media: Share your content on social media platforms to reach a wider audience.
      3. Email Marketing: Send your content to your email list. If you don’t have a list, start building one.
      4. Paid Advertising: Use paid ads to drive traffic to your content. Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and Instagram Ads are popular options.

      Tips for Driving Traffic

      • Consistency: Regularly create and share new content.
      • Engagement: Engage with your audience through comments, social media, and email.
      • Networking: Collaborate with other bloggers and influencers in your niche.

      Step 6: Track Your Performance

It’s important to track your performance to understand what’s working and what’s not.

This allows you to make data-driven decisions.

*without tracking your performance, you won’t be able to…

      Tools for Tracking Performance

      1. Google Analytics: Track your website traffic and user behavior.
      2. Affiliate Dashboards: Most affiliate programs have dashboards that show your clicks, conversions, and commissions.
      3. Social Media Analytics: Use the built-in analytics tools on social media platforms to track engagement and reach.

      Key Metrics to Monitor

      • Click-Through Rate (CTR): The percentage of people who click on your affiliate links.
      • Conversion Rate: The percentage of clicks that result in a sale.
      • Revenue: The total amount of money earned from your affiliate efforts.
      • Traffic Sources: Where your traffic is coming from.

      Step 7: Optimize and Scale

Once you have data on your performance, use it to optimize your efforts.

This means making tweaks to improve your results.

      How to Optimize

      • A/B Testing: Test different headlines, images, and calls-to-action to see what performs best.
      • Content Update: Regularly update your content to keep it relevant and accurate.
      • Focus on Top Performers: Double down on the products and strategies that are working best.

      Scaling Your Efforts

      • Diversify: Join more affiliate programs to diversify your income.
      • Outsource: Hire freelancers to help with content creation, social media, and other tasks.
      • Invest in Tools: Use tools and software to automate and streamline your processes.

      Common Mistakes to Avoid

It’s easy to make mistakes when you’re just starting out.

Here are some common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

      Plastering Links Everywhere

Refrain from plastering your affiliate links left, right and centre.

This can come across as spammy and can damage your reputation.

It screams that all you care about it earning.

      Instead, prioritise your audience.

Go above and beyond for them by providing as much value as possible.

It’s far easier to gain trust this way as you’ll be able to establish authority in your niche.

      Not Providing Value

Focus on providing valuable content. If your content is helpful, people are more likely to trust your recommendations.

      Ignoring Legal Requirements

      Always disclose your affiliate relationships.

It’s not just ethical; it’s also a legal requirement.

      A simple disclaimer will do.

Eg. This article may contain affiliate links.

I often wondered what was with the ‘may contain’ before I became an affiliate.

It seemed dishonest to say may contain instead of contains but the reason the statement reads that way is because it’s often part of post templates.

This means the disclaimer appears in every post, including posts which do not contain affiliate offers.

It’s a way to ensure the affiliate disclaimer is covered every time without having to remember to manually add it in.

      Choosing the Wrong Products

Only promote products that are relevant to your audience and that you believe in.

Promoting low-quality products can harm your reputation.

      Conclusion

Affiliate marketing offers more flexibility and scalability compared to traditional direct sales methods.

You can work from anywhere, reach a larger audience, and promote a wide range of products without the hassle of managing inventory.

Whether you’re looking to earn a side income or build a full-time business, affiliate marketing is an excellent option.

By choosing the right niche, finding good affiliate programs, and creating valuable content, you can build a successful affiliate marketing business.

Remember, it’s all about providing value and helping your audience.

      The commissions will follow.

Good luck, and happy affiliate marketing!
